Bat-eared Fox

 

  • Characteristic features
    These animals have a brown-greyish fur, black coloured legs and ears as well as a black mask alike colouring around the eyes. They can reach a shoulder height from 30- 40cm and a weight between 2,5 to 5kg. Bat-eared foxes can be found in the eastern and southern part of Africa.

  • Special characteristics
    The long ears (up to 10 cm) enable them to locate their prey, mainly insects, easily. Furthermore they have an oversized number of molars, which help them to break the hard shell of the insects. bat-eared foxes live monogamy and maximum in a group of three. Their living area is non-territorial.

  • Hunting
    Bat-eared foxes hunt mainly during dawn and dusk.

  • Food
    Their main prey consists of insects, termites, bugs, mice and lizards.

  • Enemies
    Hyaenas and big predators are the main enemies of the bat-eared foxes.

  • Life expectancy
    Their life expectancy is about 5 years.
