Warthog

 

  • Characteristic features
    Their main skin colour is grey. The neck and the upper side of the back is covered with bristles. The tail of the warthog is always vertically in the air while they are running, probably as an orientation method for following family members. The shoulder height can reach 68cm. The weight of the females varies between 45-70kg and the weight of the males between 60-100kg. The most noticeable characteristic feature are four face warts and the tusks of the males. Females have much smaller tusks.
  • Special characteristics
    While eating, warthogs knee on their front legs. They defend themselves against cheetahs, wild dogs, spotted hyenas and even leopards with their tusks. They are day active and sleep at night in ground holes, which were built by aardwolves or porcupines. Only during mating time males and females stay together. Only the females raise the piglets.

  • Food
    Their main food consists of grass, further more they eat roots, nodules, fruits, carrion and insects.

  • Enemies
    The most common enemies of warthogs are lions and leopards.

  • Life expectancy
    Warthogs can age up to 20 years.
