Harnas Wildlife Foundation Lifeline Project

Since the beginning of the Van der Merwe’s passionate quest to protect and better the life of animals in Namibia they have dedicated their time and efforts to this cause.
The ultimate dream for their predators was to give them the life and freedom that they deserve but in a safe and monitored area to ensure the long term success of wildlife rehabilitation.  Throughout the years they have attempted this in several ways.   But to find the balance between nature, wildlife, predators, protection, security, continuity, realities of conservation in Namibia, the world, etc. was not an easy task.

It took several years of trials and tribulations, shattered and rebuilt dreams, passionate devotion and many helpful hands to stand in front of this brand new door that is slowly opening to new beginnings and dreams!

Throughout these last few years the foundation was gradually laid down for this next phase.

The steps included changing all the farm dams into natural waterholes with constant waterflow, selling all of the cattle, breaking down all the inside fences and cattle pens, putting up an outer electrified security fence,  and adding strong electricity through several solar panels and modern security warning systems.

The solar systems that was installed last month that was basically the final stages of the lifeline enclosure fencing.  The system has been technologically adapted for our specified needs with an alarm phoning our telephone lines if any wire is touched, has a problem or breaks down.

But now we need as much help as possible to perform the following steps to finalize this entire project:

  1. The buying of the entire GPS collar system set out below, to enable us to release the chosen animals in the 8000 ha Lifeline camp whilst being daily monitored to see if they successfully adapt in their new environment.

After much research we have decided we will use the company Vectronic Aerospace GmbH Germany to purchase the entire system from. The system will have a communication range of around 5km between the chosen animal with the collar and the relay tower.  The tower will work completely with solar power and batteries.  The collars will transmit data to the tower, from where the data will be stored within the tower.  An additional radio modem is then linked to our PC and will then download the collar data from the tower to our PC in the office.  Although the system is complex and not standard, Harnas can serve as a testing ground to hopefully perfect it.

The Cost and details

  1. Autonomous Tower, incl. solar cells and rechargeable batteries:  Estimated at around 5000 Euro.
  2. The price for the 10m antenna mast needed is around 2000 Euro.
  3. The price for the master station which will be mounted on the roof of our office is estimated at around 3000 Euro.
  4. GPS collars with a UHF remote download for

LION: GPS Plus-3 Collar (à Euro 2500)
BROWN HYENA: GPS Plus – 2 Collars ( à 2450 Euro)
LEOPARD: GPS Plus – 1 Collar (2400 Euro)
WILD DOG, CHEETAH, CARACALS: GPS Plus -1C Collar (à 2400 Euro)

In addition we would need the following for the collars

  1. VHF Beacon transmitter for around 100 Euro Each – this is strongly recommended as a backup system
  2. Activity logging of each animal for estimated 100 Euro each

NOTE:

The first company or individual who sponsors a GPS Collar will get a FREE week-end accommodation for 1 person. If you sponsor 2 Collars it will be for 2 persons and so on...

(Our filmstar Arsem, who played a very important role in Angelina Jolies "Beyond Borders" will for sure be very envious to see the big cats with the fancy new necklaces...)

Furthermore we will need to set up an anti poaching unit that will run on 24 hour surveillance.

This anti-poaching unit needs to function on a 24 hour basis on all 4 borders of the lifeline camp.  It is of vital importance that this team is efficient and of a reliable company to ensure maximum security and safety to guests and animals.

The cost and details

  1. 2 times 4 wheel quad bikes that are light on fuel and easily manageable by anti-poaching squad.  Estimated around N$50 000 per bike.
  2. An anti-poaching team of rotating staff members.  We were quoted by Namibian Protection Services for around N$30 000 per month for such a team
  3. A living unit for this team estimated to erect at around N$60 000.00

Prey / Antelope species

It is one of the most important parts of the entire program to make sure that the lifeline area is stocked with the correct type and amount of antelopes/prey species.

  1. We therefore need to buy a large amount of impala, springbok, hartebeest, and other species to urgently start stocking the lifeline camp.  It is very important that the prey / antelopes have an opportunity to get to know their perimeters, waterholes and entire area well before predators are released.  This would prevent animals running through fences or being unfair prey.
  2. You can contact us to help us purchase the needed game species.

If you would like to help us by sponsoring game, you can let us know or contact directly
